Why I Won’t Rep You

On a somewhat regular basis, I get approached by a company that wants to “work with me”. For me to rep them as an Ambassador.

Now, firstly, I am 100% certain that they approach hundreds of people in order to get just a couple interested. I am also certain that they aren’t picky. They probably have something programmed into their profile to automatically message anyone who use certain hashtags.

I look at everyone who messages me to see if their product aligns with my needs and beliefs. And here’s some of my criteria.

CLOTHING

Nothing pisses me off more than a clothing company messaging me to become an Ambassador when their clothing won’t fit. Seriously, if I wear a 2xl and their clothing is only s-m-l, then don’t message me!

I get it! It’s probably a computer messaging me and obviously going to do no work to ascertain whether I’m an appropriate candidate, but still. If your message is “We’ve reviewed your profile and think you’re a good match…” I call bullshit. If you HAD actually looked at my profile, you’d see that I’m a curvy “plus size” person and your product doesn’t cater to women with curves.

Now, if your clothing line is size inclusive and I like what I see, I look at your social media pages. If you sell all sizes, I want to see equal visibility on your pages. There have been a few times that a company has clothing I like and is size inclusive but you’d never know it by looking at their Instagram page. I know I’m “nobody” in regards to being a social media influencer but I won’t support a company that claims they’re size inclusive but only shows their clothing on models who are a small or extra small. Showing a model who is a medium or large isn’t “size inclusive”. If your sizes go up to 4xl, then you better represent them – and the sizes in between – equally.

Clothing Company Picks

Londre – A swimwear company based in Canada started by women. Ethical and environmentally sustainable, the swimsuits are made from recycled plastic. Sizes go up to XXL but they’re realistic sizing (XXL has a hip size of 48-51″). A little pricey but worth it.

Girlfriend Collective – An activewear company based out of Seattle. Ethical and environmentally sustainable, the activewear is made from recycled plastic bottles. Sizes go from XXS-6XL and their website and social media include representation of all women – including ethnicities. My favorite pants but wish there was more variety of inseams but they’re slowly adding more products and have seasonal special collections with different colors. At the moment they’re not shipping to Canada (possibly due to Covid) that I disappointingly discovered as I tried to check out my shopping cart! Hopefully soon as they’re my favorite activewear!

Pineapple Clothing – activewear and clothing, is based out of Miami and ships worldwide and I believe free shipping. They carry both women’s and girl’s clothing – and matching (hello “mommy and me” photoshoots!) Girls is size 18 months to 16, and women’s is XS TO 4XL. The part I love about them is they use photos from their customers on their Social Media. Mom’s and daughters, yogis, active, casual, night out, and every size they sell. Fun and bright, their clothing will make you stand out!

SUPPLEMENTS & BEAUTY

This topic irks me. I have been contacted several times recently from people wanting me to use their products. I don’t know if this surge of home based businesses (aka, MLM) is due to covid and people looking at alternative methods of making money but it irks me. Let me make it simple:

I’M NOT INTERESTED!!

If you want me to use your product, you’d better be ready to give it to me for free to use before I start endorsing it. And guess what? No one has taken me up on that prerequisite.

If your supplement is a weight loss of any type, cleanse of any type, I’m not interested. If your skincare product will “erase lines and signs of aging” I’m not interested.

Now, before you ask me why I wouldn’t want to look younger, THAT right there is the problem! Society tells us how we’re supposed to look – and heaven forbid women get and LOOK older! That doesn’t mean I’m not going to take care of my skin, I’m just very selective about what I put on my skin.

For both supplements and skincare, there’s a few things I look for:

  • All natural
  • Non GMO
  • Organic
  • Ethical
  • Vegan
  • Fragrance free
  • Dye free
  • As few additives or preservatives as possible
  • Bonus points if Canadian

Not too much to ask for, right?

My current favorite wellness support supplement (for lack of a better word) is Blume. Not only do they meet all my “requirements”, they get the bonus points as they’re Canadian!

The truth is, companies don’t need reps. The reason they do it is because for 10 or 15 percent off, it’s essentially free advertising. Businesses are recognizing that things have changed and how they used to advertise is no longer viable. There’s millions of people on Instagram – so just as they don’t need me, I don’t need them. If I decide to rep or be an Ambassador for a company, it’s because I believe in them and love their products.

And most, honestly? Most don’t meet my standards. Those who have are on a new page I created.
