F*@# Your Non-Opinion

There comes a time in your life that you just have to say “fuck this and fuck your opinion”… or in some cases, your “non-opinion”

Every Friday at work, we’re allowed to wear civilian clothing and now that it’s summer, I’m breaking out the dresses. Today I wore a cute little orange flowery “fit and flare” dress – with an appropriate cover-up so my offensive tattoo is covered up. I wore a little make up and even decided to wear heels – cause, you know, wearing heels makes your legs look better! *eye-roll*. I haven’t worn heels in a very long time. I don’t even recall the last time. Maybe it was our anniversary, but I kinda doubt that as that was in April and I’m certain the weather was shitty!

So I was all pleased with myself and wore heels for the first time in forever and I lasted until about 130 and that included a walk to the farewell luncheon. And you know what?

No one said a damn thing. Not even “isn’t that showing too much cleavage?”… which is possible, but as I look down at my boobs, it always looks like there’s too much cleavage! The closest thing said was my direct co-worker who said “Oh, you’re wearing heels. That’s why you’re taller”. Yup. Short little legs + heels = 2” taller!

You know, it would have been nice to get some sort of acknowledgement. Something that indicated that they see that I put effort into the day. But no. Nothing. Nadda. Typical.

One thing I have learned is that if you go through life expecting recognition, you’ll get nothing but disappointment. Most people are so self-absorbed by their own shit that’s going on, they don’t really care what’s going on with you. Yes, some people do actually pay attention to things like that and actually say something, but I’ve found that most don’t. I try to tell people if I notice but, admittedly, a lot of times I don’t as they’re strangers. Like the other day. I was sitting behind a gal on the bus and she had the prettiest hair I’d seen. It was styled really different but it was gorgeous – and the color and highlights… I should have said something but I didn’t.

I remember a time, years ago – over 11 years as we were in Calgary – and I was shopping. I was in line to pay for whatever I was getting and this gal in front of me turned around, looked at me and did one of those full body up and down looks. Really obvious and awkward – for me, anyhow. Then she looked at the gal behind me and was like “You have a good style…” and proceeded to ask her for her opinion about her planned purchases. Yup. That’s me. Kaylee “no style” Norton.

Honestly? I’ve never followed fashion trends. I follow both “whatever the hell I feel like”, and “whatever makes me happy” and I’d rather shop second hand than in regular stores. I like finding pieces that not everyone in my area might be wearing. Been there, kinda sucks!

As much as it would have been nice to have had someone say something, I really don’t care. I like how I look, I feel pretty, and the only person who’s opinion truly matters besides my own is my hubby – and as far as he’s concerned, if I’m happy, he’s happy!

Following trends is fine, but don’t do it out of obligation. Some years, the colors that are popular to the season simply don’t look good on me! Or sometimes the styles I don’t like and don’t look good! Why would I wear something that doesn’t make me feel amazing?

Being in style and having a style is very different – and having a style is way more important than being in style. Maybe you love retro fashion. Maybe you like boho. It doesn’t matter what it is, just love however you decide to dress your body!

And whatever you do, don’t let anyone’s opinion – or non-opinion – dissuade you from being awesome!
