Navigating the Summer BBQ

So yesterday, we had my staff summer BBQ. Leading up to it, those I work closest to who were organizing it were concerned about what I’d have to eat. They had suggested getting some veggie burgers for me, but I told them not to bother – I had been planning on bringing my own burger anyhow – and I’m not so anal that I refuse to have my vegan burger cooked on the same grill as meat.

As it turned out, I wasn’t going to be the only non-meat eater there. The night before the BBQ, I got a message from my boss as one of the other guests didn’t eat meat and she was hoping I could bring another veggie burger.

Sure! Not a problem!

I ended up arriving at the BBQ over 1 1/2 hours late – my commute was over 2 hours! Good bus system, but had NO idea it was going to take that long! My husband who was joining me at the park as he gets off work at 11am on Friday’s, almost beat me there – and he had to go home and shower and change and everything!!!

Anyhow, as soon as I got there, I found the gal who was vegetarian and I immediately made a friend! She had some of the salads earlier but was extremely thankful for the burger. I even brought my vegan cheese – good stuff, not some of that crap that’s out there! Then we chatted for about 30 minutes about vegan options, struggles with eating out and gatherings – and how Hellmann’s new Vegan mayo has been a real game changer!.

But I made it through – not a problem, actually! I made a delicious salad – Thai peanut salad – that, originally, I thought I’d be taking way too much but came home with very little. And the fact I was 1 1/2 hours late and everyone had already eaten, that’s saying something!

Being vegan has, in no way, impacted my ability to participate in activities. Restaurants typically always has something available – or modifiable upon request – and events, like this one, was a potluck, so taking your own dish guarantees there’ll be something you can eat.

And maybe if your dish is the tastiest there, people will stop assuming that being vegan has you missing out!
