Whatever your goal is in life, I have come to realize if you’re not present in the now, you’re going nowhere. It’s good to have a plan – what your goal is, milestones along the way, measurable tasks to complete – but all the plans and ideas in the world don’t mean anything if you never show up to do the work!
You can read all the books in the world, attend hundreds of live seminars, listen to thousands of pod casts, make dozens of “to-do” lists and NONE of that will matter if you do nothing with that information or those ideas! You may get fired up from something you read or see or hear – but that person isn’t there with you! They can’t hold your hand when you stumble. They can’t fan the flame to burn brighter.
YOU have to. YOU have to do the work. YOU need to dig deep and find that motivation to keep going when you’re tired. YOU need to stay strong when no one is watching. YOU need to resist that binge eating. YOU need to write those words of that novel you’ve dreamed of writing. YOU need to send that email to that person you look up to. YOU need to show up and put in the work to turn that motivation into ACTION!
The world needs dreamers… but the dreamers need to bring their thoughts and dreams into fruition! Why have all these ideas if they’re not shared with the world?!
“Don’t ask what the world needs. Ask what makes you come alive, and go do it. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive.”Brene Brown
At some point, you need to stop making lists and turn that desire into action. Time is going to pass anyhow, might as well try! No matter how many times you fall down, get back up. Failure only means that way didn’t work, not that it won’t work. Failure means you’re trying. Failure doesn’t define you, so don’t take it personally.
Find what you’re passionate about. Find what makes you feel alive; that gives you purpose. This can be anything – solely personal, or environmental, sociological… whatever! Are you passionate about the environment? Try to arrange a community cleanup. Are you driven to take your health back? Post your journey on social media to help motivate others. Are you new to a certain lifestyle? Post your tips and tricks online! Are you passionate about hair and makeup? Create a YouTube channel for tutorials!
You have one life to live and dreaming about everything you want to do with no action is a pointless way to spend your existence. You are meant more than just earning a paycheck – if you believe so and if you work for it!
“Doubt kills more dreams than failure ever will”
Yes, some people seem to have their purpose set out for them from a very young age, but only a very small percentage, so stop comparing yourself to them! Sitting there lamenting about what could have been and how, at 40, your life is half over is pointless! There’s PLENTY of people who have become house-hold names “later in life”. J.K. Rowling had the first Harry Potter book published at 32 years old! Melissa McCarthy worked for 10 years until, at 41, became well known. Alan Rickman was 42 when he hit it big. Vera Wang opened her first bridal boutique at 40. Judy Dench was in her 60’s by the time she got serious recognition.
So stop comparing yourself to that 15 year old ballet dancer. Or that 20 year old mega-star. Or 23 year old entrepreneur. Or anyone on the “Top 30 under 30”! Don’t compare your beginning with their middle!
Stop looking back at your life at everything you didn’t do.
You have now. Today. This moment to decide “TODAY is going to be better.”… not tomorrow. Not next week. NOW. TODAY. This very moment is the time to change how you feel and think about your situation.
Do you like where you’re at? No?
Can you do anything about it? Yes? THEN DO IT!!!
Can you do anything about it? No? You’re wrong.
You may not be able to change your actual situation, but you can change your mindset. Sometimes the only thing you can control about a situation is how you respond to it. If you don’t like your job, starting your morning with “I hate this. I hate my job. I don’t want to go to work today“, then guess what? I can guarantee that you are going to have a shitty day! But if you wake up and are grateful that you have a job (even if you don’t like it) then your day will go better.
If you want to do something meaningful with your life, your current circumstances play no part in it. Yes, you have a job because those bills aren’t going to pay themselves, are they? So you need the job? SO WHAT! Find something “meaningful” to do when you’re not working! Don’t know what to do? There’s lots of opportunities for online learning that’s cheap. Sure, their certificates may not hold any weight in real life, but it’s a good way to explore areas that you are curious of without making a huge financial commitment.
Even if you don’t have the money but have time – volunteer! Most cities are desperate for volunteers. Sometimes crucial programs run entirely on volunteers.
There are SO many ways to enrich your life to make it feel like it holds meaning. Whatever you decide to do – whether it’s follow a dream or simply add simple meaning to your life – stop talking and start doing!
